Event description

"Sleeping Beauty" as a Masterpiece of Ballet

“Sleeping Beauty” is one of the most famous works in the ballet repertoire and a wonderful children’s fairy tale. In the International Festival’s ballet production, the dancers bring to life this magical story based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty," which was first staged as a ballet in 1890 to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Marius Petipa.

An impressive spectacle of beauty, elegance, and grace, combined with breathtaking costumes, truly regal sets, and the unique passion of the dancers from the “International Festival Ballet,” impressively transports the audience into a fairy-tale world of fantasy and dreams. A perfect work of art accompanied by a live orchestra.

Background and Plot

In a fairy-tale world of fairies, princes, and a beautiful maiden, the ballet ensemble of the International “Ballet” Festival will present the enchanting story of one of the most popular children’s fairy tales of our time—“Sleeping Beauty.” Known in Germany as a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the story of a young woman cursed by an evil fairy and who can be saved only by a true love’s kiss was adapted into a ballet and premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1890. To this day, “Sleeping Beauty” remains one of the most popular ballets and is part of the standard international classical ballet repertoire.

A Creative Partnership of Geniuses: Tchaikovsky and Petipa

The ballet “Sleeping Beauty” was created through close collaboration between Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Marius Petipa, perhaps the most outstanding choreographer of the 19th century. Its formal perfection and highly developed choreographic and musical expressiveness delight even the most discerning connoisseur, and thanks to its fairy-tale-like spontaneity and theatrical splendor, “Sleeping Beauty” also captivates a wide audience.

The visual and musical splendor of the production

The interplay of exquisite costumes, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s live music, and Marius Petipa’s virtuoso choreography brings a fairy-tale world to life on stage. Every dance step, every musical chord, and every element of the set design is carefully crafted and contributes to the ballet’s magical atmosphere.

In addition, the grand sets by the brilliant theater designer Vyacheslav Okunev—who worked, among others, for the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and La Scala in Milan—along with the exquisite costumes, boundless elegance, and lightheartedness. The combination of dance perfection, musical brilliance, and visual splendor makes *Sleeping Beauty* an unforgettable experience for both children and adults.

The Timeless Magic of Ballet

With every turn and leap, the International Festival Ballet transports its audience into a world of magic and beauty that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy. The timeless story of “Sleeping Beauty” is presented in this production with such dedication and elegance that, even decades later, it continues to move and enchant the hearts of audiences.
